Welcome & Orientation Online Learner Success (3 hours)
This session is planned to setup all student accounts, supplies, student ID cards and to provide an overview of CNC student supports. This course will also provide learners with a working knowledge of virtual and online learning.
Microsoft Word 2016 – Level 1 (24 hours)
This course will introduce students to Microsoft Word’s most important features. Key topics include creating a new document, making it look professional and presentable, adding graphics, and customizing the Microsoft Word interface. After completing this course, students will be ready to use Microsoft Word to efficiently complete daily tasks.
Microsoft Excel – Level 1 (24 hours)
This course is intended to help all novice computer users get up to speed with Excel quickly. We will cover different features of the interface, show users how to print, cover some simple scenarios, and cover the basics of formatting.

Microsoft Outlook (24 hours)
Microsoft Office Outlook 2016 incorporates some new features that will help make managing your e-mail and personal information easier than ever. This course will help students get comfortable with the Outlook 2016 interface, creating and sending messages, managing contacts, using the calendar, managing tasks, and working with notes.
Mental Illness and Substance Abuse for Frontline Workers (15 hours)
This introductory course is designed to provide participants with basic knowledge about mental illness and substance use. Through lectures and discussion, participants will be offered the opportunity to gain insight and understanding of the impact of living with mental illness and/or substance use. Participants will be given essential tools and resources that will assist them with engaging and interacting with people who might be struggling.
Cultural Awareness (3 hours)
Curriculum provides an overview of fundamental concepts of Carrier culture. The facilitation and learning styles in this workshop are reflective of First Nations cultures and mainly draw on examples from the Carrier Nation.
Gender Diversity (5 hours)
- Intro to Gender Diversity – this online course introduces students to key terms and concepts related to gender diversity, barriers to care that gender diverse people commonly face and strategies for creating accessible and affirming services.
- Indigenous Gender Diversity – this online course helps learners increase awareness, knowledge, and skills for improving access to services for gender diverse Indigenous people across BC.
- Supporting gender creative children and their families – the learning objectives for this online course include:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of childhood gender development
- Demonstrate an understanding of social affirmation and social transition
- Identify a child and family’s strengths, needed supports, and appropriate referrals.
- Identify appropriate steps for school personnel to take in support of a gender creative or transgender child.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the community in supporting gender creative and transgender children and their families.
Autism and Neurodiversity in the Workplace (5 hours)
This online program consists of six modules and is designed to assist anyone interested in inclusive employment to learn practical strategies on how to support all employees to be successful on the job. The modules include the following topics:
- Understanding Autism in the Workplace
- The Business Case for Hiring Inclusively
- Creating an Inclusive Workplace Culture
- Inclusive Recruitment Strategies
- Inclusive Employee Retention Strategies
- Practical Information for Employment Support Staff
FoodSafe Level 1 (8 hours)
FoodSafe Level 1 is a food handling, sanitation, and work safety course for front line food service workers. The course covers food-borne illness & receiving, storing, preparing, and serving food. Certification issued by Northern Health Authority
Service Worker Essentials
Trauma Informed Practice (3 hours)
This online course will give participants an understanding of how trauma affects people, how to recognize trauma, how to implement a response to trauma that informs all behaviors, language, programs and policies and prevents the re-traumatization of clients and staff.
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (24 hours)
This course will help participants to identify and respond to challenging behavior, recognize how their own behavior impacts a crisis and learn safety intervention strategies that minimize harm.
Mental Health First Aid (12 hours)
This course will give participants the confidence and skills to engage with someone who has an emerging mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis, gives a greater recognition of mental health problems and can improve their own mental health status
Self-Care Series (24 hours)
The following self-care strategies will be explored:
- Stress and Anxiety – participants will gain a better understanding of what drives stress and anxiety, the psychological and physiological aspects, the impact of personal triggers and how to recognize when stress and anxiety move from manageable to unmanageable.
- Mindfulness – participants learn a nonjudgmental approach to being present in the moment, acknowledging the situation and the feelings associated with it.
- Assertiveness – participants will learn techniques that will enable them to act in their own best interests, stand up for themselves without undue anxiety, express honest feelings comfortably and to exercise their own rights without denying the rights of others.
- Conflict Resolution – participants will learn and utilize the following skills in managing conflict resolution: Active listening, communication techniques, not placing blame, remaining calm and collaboration.
- Self-esteem – the learning outcomes for this course will include: an ability to work towards your goals more persistently and effectively, you will be better equipped to meet your own needs, an acceptance of your past and looking forward to your future, you will worry less about what people think of you and enjoy richer, more satisfying relationships with others.
Communication Strategies (12 hours)
A major goal of this workshop is to help participants understand the impact that their communication skills have on other people. They will also explore how improving these skills can make it easier for them to get along in the workplace, and in life.
- Identify common communication problems that may be holding them back
- Develop skills to ask questions
- Learn what their non-verbal messages are telling others
- Develop skills in listening actively and empathetically to others
- Enhance their ability to handle difficult situations
